Wildcuts?/font> Gallery 2 Arguably the boat is the purest aesthetic object - fitness to its purpose, refined over the millennia, yielding up something ineffably beautiful, whose beauty blends with myth and the deepest narrative impulses of the human mind. A boat--almost any boat--is a story in line and proportion, a poem in tension and sprung poise. A boat is the hero of epic, and the subject of romance. It is the icon of questing and also of homecoming; the perpetual ?es and ?o of things. Boats together...yes - in dialogue, in mute companionship, occasionally nudging gunwales. The way a donkey is often put in a field to keep a lone horse company, so they can stand together, apart but aware of each other in the rain and the wind, double statues, figure and ground. The duchess and the homeless woman at separate tables in an otherwise deserted all night cafe. I think that the human story more often than not comes boat-shaped. The pleasure boats moored in the harbor look frivolous compared to their working relatives... good boats, like heroes are always wounded...--Ian Buckley
