I love barns.
The ones you will find on these pages are painstakingly made by hand to reflect the true heart and soul of these lovely old structures. The wooden
siding is made from the exterior veneer of old barn boards rescued from
abandoned structures that are about to be destroyed. I do not remove material
from structurally sound buildings.
The barns are made very close to scale and
accurate in every detail. The roof is made from real cedar shingles. The
windowpanes are of sheet mica. Most of my barns have a lightning rod
system made of copper. The door hinges are made from
either rusted steel or pewter. The models I build are of barns I've come across in my travels throughout New England and across America.
Normally the barns are made from 1/4" plywood then covered with veneer barn wood and wooden shingles. The
Vermont red barn on this page is made in the post and beam manner. It's really
quite stunning in its detail from the hay in the loft to the bird droppings on
the roof. You will never see another one like it. I make very few of the post
and beam models because of the time involved.
