I've spent many summers waiting with my head bowed on the sandy bank,
the flotsam and jetsam like dangling detritus in the last warm tide,
waiting for the sea to turn, for the sulfur to blow away,

for the sweetness to flood my sense.

It is worth the wait.

Later, the wood thrush sings a song of breaking crystal,

invisible in the hissing forest.

The boredom of late summer on the east coast

inhabits every one of my paintings.
